Starting Impressions/Current Needs

Observations at Concerts:

The past few weeks I have been going to some concerts: one independent artist, Sammy Adams and one popular DJ, Yellow Claw. I noticed that people were really excited about who they were seeing, whether it was the openers or the headliners. The two audiences were full of energy at the beginning of the night. By the end of the Yellow Claw concert, people were droopy, there was a dissatisfied look on some people’s face, some looked like they didn’t want the night to end.  At the Sammy Adams concert, people were full of life the entire night, from beginning to end. It was a non-stop fun experience.

Overhearing and talking with other members in each audience, everyone had something to say. Many were saying to their friends how great the shows were, how their experience went, they were saying what parts were their favorite, and much more. Even for the ones that had a little dissatisfaction at the Yellow Claw concert, they were talking about what they didn’t like, what more they wanted out of the show, and the list goes on. The main point that I got out of being at these concerts is, people have something to say and give feedback. The problem is, do the artists ever get to know this information.

Seeing this at concerts made me think that something can be done hear so that each experience that we go to, we know that it is going to be one of the best experiences. What better way to know how to make it better than from the ones that are experiencing it. Figuring out why the people feel the way they feel about the experience and understanding what can be changed, can be taken a long way. No one is perfect and there are always ways to get better, but what happens when you think you’re good at what you do and you get comfortable? The people get comfortable too.

Moving Forward/Current Needs:

Look more into what happens after a concert

  • Talk with venues and promoters about what is done afterwards
  • Try surveying people to see what feedback people give

Narrow it to just concert experience for performance

With artists, it is learning how they utilize fans/supporters

Project Information

Project Title:

Making a Quality Music Experience: Fan to Artist Feedback

Synopsis:

“Making a Quality Music Experience: Fan to Artist Feedback” is a project to understand how important adding  fan-to-artist communication, as a tool, to create quality music experiences based on what fans are looking for in their music.

Research Questions:

  1. Is there a need for fan to musician feedback/critique?
  2. What is a better way to increase fan to musician communication?
  3. How do we put out quality music?

Description:

My project for this semester will consist of collecting qualitative and quantitative research through interviews, surveys, and other techniques in order to provide the musicians/performers/promoters consumer feedback and critique to potentially make their performances and music better. I see musicians having communication between them and their fans, but hardly ever fan feedback sent to the artist. Because of the lack of what the fan is looking for and why they choose their music, creates the lack of quality in music that we see/hear today.

The audience for this project are local/upcoming musicians/artists that want to increase the communication between themselves and their fans/supporters. Also, the research would be fueled by fans, of course, so it would intrigue the fanatics of certain artists. But the idea is to get the fans/supporters talking to the musicians/artists about their experience from their performances. (Even create fanatics because they feel like they are in the experience.)

This is the precursor to developing a technology to have better fan-to-artist communication to give the fans/supporters more of a voice in what they want to consume in terms of music and entertainment.

Process/Research:

The way I intend to approach this research is by working with two local rap artists, a local DJ, and possibly a local band to see how they are using fan feedback or if they are using any kind of fan communication in their music process. If they aren’t using one or are lacking a better fan-based communication plan, provide them with one and see over the course of the project if the get better as artists and if they have more viewers/listeners to their music. I would also be at their shows/events asking the audience about their experience with the artists.

I plan to look at past studies about how artists utilize communication to their fans. Looking at the business projection for the music industry through fans and fan involvement.

Sources that I will also look into coming into contact with are programs like Program Council and venues locally on how they get consumer feedback and use it to make the next event better. Setting up meetings to talk and get my questions answered by venues, programs, and promoters will be the toughest task but is possible.

Thinking about My Project this Semester

Domains/Methods:

Sound – using DAWs to create a composition or a remix of some sort

Entertainment – something in reference or analyzing entertainment, I have gone to a lot of concerts and am interested in why people choose to go them and/or choose the music they listen to

Precedents:

Video Game Design – Sound Course

Sound Design for advertisements – Music Technology

Podcasting

Questions:

How could I incorporate entertainment to engineering more so on the sound side of things?
